Educational Websites

Educational Websites

~  Free Rice
http://freerice.com/
I played a quick game of vocabulary on Free Rice and easily donated 500 grains of rice.  It was super fun and tested my vocabulary at the same time.  There are other subjects as well: Art, Chemistry, Language Learning, English, Geography, and Math.  The 5th grade teacher I observed recently uses this website in her class.  So all her 50 students at the end of the day donates rice while learning a new language or testing their math skills.  Great website.

~  Kids Know It
http://www.kidsknowit.com/index.php
I ran into material where I was learning about the constellations.  I loved the "Constellation Jig" song but that constellation game on this website is incredibly difficult.  Trying to find the constellations amongst the diagram given seemed impossible; I couldn't even get past the first task.  There's also a map game.  I played the Asia map match game and I found out there are so many tiny countries that make up the continent.  Another great tool is Kids Biology.  You can learn about the human body and the systems.

~  Teens Health
http://teenshealth.org/teen/
I love this website because it gives nutritional information not only about normal active teens but also athletes.  This will help me in the future when teaching PE or Health class in high school but it also is useful now since I've been looking for good information on athlete nutrition for my gymnasts.  I'm so glad I ran across this.  Teens Health also offers great recipes for teens (vegetarian and not) and teens with cystic fibrosis, diabetes, lactose intolerance, etc; also tobacco, drugs and alcohol information, and sexual health.

Thing #16

Thing #16 Wikis

Wikis are basically free website creation for the public.  It's a tool that can be easily created and edited and allow certain users that freedom to do so.  The examples that I searched through were libraries and school websites.  The library wikis were extremely detailed and I found it easy to sift through the information.  I also ran into a few teacher wikis that posed as their official website page.  This is a great tool for education because it's free!  And can be used for classroom use, such as posting homework, project, calendar, events, school updates, etc.

Thing #6

Thing # 6 Flickr fun, mashups, & third party sites

The Flickr Color Pickr was so much fun to play with.  You choose a color from the color wheels, like yellow, and it pops up several images that are yellow.  It's a great tool to make a collage school project.  Next I made a trading card from FD Toys' Trading Card Maker.  Here is my Trading Card:

Thing #18

Thing #18 Zoho Writer

Zoho writer and Google docs are remarkably similar to any Microsoft Office program.  I created a Spring 2011 schedule for school and work on Zoho and then a random word document page on Google docs- just getting use to the buttons.  Zoho writer was very familiar as it worked exactly like a word document.  A Google document did the same things as well but inserting text was by adding a text box.  It worked just like a Microsoft Publisher document.  Google sites is a great site where you can create a website for free!  Who needs a website designer anymore?

Webspiration in the classroom

Last week, when using Webspiration with our partners to complete an assignment was a great way to work in groups/partners.  The program allows online communication, which let's the students work together without having to meet in person.  This increases the chances of classwork getting finished because of that accessibility and ease that's available right there on the Internet.
